Facts in brief

Hidden in 4 acres of jungle at the base of the Pidurangala rock is our retreat, which the villagers have named as “Kurulu Uyana” (Bird Park). A bird park, it certainly is, but what makes it unique is that it is walking distance to Pidurangala rock, which rises to 650 feet literally next door. Pre-breakfast climbs for sunrise, and another climb at sunset are really wonderful, especially because you have a great view of Sigiriya from the summit of Pidurangala. But often our guests (particularly return guests), prefer to enjoy the quiet and serene atmosphere and spend entire vacations right here within our premises, with the only “disturbance” being an occasional elephant walking through.

Several tree-houses and cottages scattered in the forest cater to the solo-traveller, families and large groups up to a maximum of 28 pax. At the turn off to our property, is a small Wellness Centre and Vegetarian Café, offering ayurveda massages, health foods and snacks.

Accommodation:

7 tree-houses and 2 cottages for a maximum of 28 adults and children on bed and breakfast, half board and full board basis. Tree Houses for 2, 3, 4 and 5 pax are available. Attached washrooms with hot water.

Dining:

Custom prepared Sri Lankan and western meals will be served in the dining areas. Tea, coffee and drinking water provided free of charge. Alcohol not provided, guests are at liberty to bring in their own.

Stay elevated: Tree houses with Pidurangala Rock as your backdrop

Named after trees of the area, our tree houses have well-built wooden steps leading to the sleeping quarters which is furnished with hand-crafted comfortable beds. The rooms are open and you feel as if you are part of the boulder-strewn forest. You are surrounded by the whisper of rustling leaves and bird song. The spacious lounge deck on the upper floor is the ideal place to sit by the safety railing with binoculars in hand.

At the base of the tree house at ground level, you have an open lounge to relax and sip a drink. The modern washroom is attached and with hot and cold water in the open air shower area. You can enjoy a long shower under the skies watching the eagles soaring overhead.

Milla, Ebony and Weera tree houses face Pidurangala rock.

Cosy cottages nestling in the forest

Our two individual cottages are named after two of our favourite resident birds, the Shama (the songster) and the MalKoha (a rare bird). The cottages, each with its own verandah, are designed to give you the maximum feel of the forest. Rooms have attached washrooms with hot and cold water.

Dining

The gastronomic experience is a vital part of any holiday, and at Back of Beyond we believe the meals should be as memorable as the surroundings. Our versatile cooks take pride in catering to every palate – from authentic village-style meals prepared with time-honored recipes, to western favorites with a creative twist, as well as fusion dishes that bring together the best of both worlds. Each cook adds a personal touch with their own signature specialties, making every meal a unique experience.

In keeping with the traditions of our Back of Beyond retreats, the emphasis remains on wholesome, home-style cooking. Fresh vegetables, leafy greens, and herbs indigenous to the area are central to our menus, giving each dish a genuine village flavor. Even our western dishes are infused with a distinct Sri Lankan touch, whether it’s a hint of local spice, a fragrant curry leaf, or the warmth of coconut milk. Guests can look forward not just to nourishment, but to a journey through the tastes and traditions of the region, served with care and authenticity.

A culinary delight: Unforgettable flavours and phenomenal dishes at Back of Beyond!

Oh the food – loved it! I couldn’t find anything to complain about. Each dish had it’s own individual tastes – from the barbecue with fire cooked pork to the kiribath and the strings – Oh the food! Phenomenal…

A perfect escape: Hidden adventures, tranquil getaway, and endless memories!

It was a great escape from the city and we had many fun adventures. We even found a hidden passage through the forest around the ancient ruins… Despite the lack of a television, we weren’t bored for a minute…
Good bye and take care and hope to hang out here once again.

Friendly, attentive staff who go above and beyond!

The staff were wonderful. Friendly, efficient and always willing. A special touch is that there was always someone volunteering to go with us as a guide anywhere we wanted to!! They were always available without ever being intrusive.

Nalinika, Colombo

Comfortable cottages, amazing food, and beautiful natural surroundings!

We stayed 3 nights here and really liked it. The cottages are great, first time with such a good sleep even without AC. Great aircon going through the cottage ! everything was very clean and well maintained in a great natural environment with trees, birds, animals running around. The food is amazing and so good: congratulations to the cook.

Back of Beyond is a little piece of heaven.

The staff is absolutely wonderful (among them the naturalist Induwara, who is not only incredibly nice, but also clearly very knowledgeable and passionate about nature). The treehouse is very well equipped, and it offers the most unique experience: a full immersion in the jungle. Bonus: the food was delicious. We really appreciated the way everything is organized around respecting the environment at Back of Beyond, and we loved all the proposed activities, such as loris spotting and safari, where we had fun and learned a lot. Very, very highly recommend!

A truely wonderful & unique experience.

A unique experience waking in the tree canopy where we could hear & see the monkeys in the adjacent trees going about their daily business. Outdoor but private shower a real treat. The staff were excellent and the meals were beautifully presented and delicious including a candle lit BBQ dinner. Great stepping off point for safari’s, boat rides, Sagiriya Rock & other attractions such as a wood carver & having a traditional breakfast with a local farm family. A local nocturnal excursion spotting the rare & elusive Loris primates was amazing & a highlight. We highly recommend this wonderful venue and what it offers. Tip: September & October not busy, so an excellent time to visit & enjoy.

We sliepen 2 nachten bij Back of Beyond.

Alles was dichtbij.

Truly unforgettable

We spent three nights in a treehouse at Back of Beyond and it was truly unforgettable. The place is beautifully cared for and clean, with an atmosphere that feels both peaceful and deeply connected to nature. The staff are incredibly kind and genuinely go out of their way to make your stay special. With their knowledge and local connections, they’re always ready to give the right tips or offer help whenever you need it. The location is perfect – surrounded by nature yet just a short tuk tuk ride from town. We loved the eco-friendly approach and the way they care about the environment, which made our stay feel even more meaningful. If you’re looking for the ultimate place to relax, unwind, and reconnect with nature, this is it. We left completely recharged and satisfied. A very big thank you to Thusitha for arranging so much for us, and also to Wasantha for the care during our stay. You both made our time at Back of Beyond truly special.

Induware was zeer ervaren.

Truly serene and beautiful experience.

I visited this place with my family, and it was a truly serene and beautiful experience. If you love nature, this is a perfect choice. The rooms are open to the natural surroundings while still offering complete privacy. It’s located very close to both Pidurangala Rock and Sigiriya Rock, making it an ideal spot—especially if you plan to watch the sunrise from Pidurangala Rock. Rooms – The rooms are very clean and well-organized. Although there’s no air conditioning, hot water is available / Nearby activities – Climb Pidurangala Rock, visit the Pidurangala Temple, explore Thalkote Lake, and hike up Sigiriya Rock. / Safety – Be mindful of wild animals and small insects during your stay. / Walkability – Walking isn’t ideal, so it’s best to arrange a taxi. / Food and drinks – The food and drinks are delicious. / Noteworthy details – Peaceful stay near Sigiriya, clean rooms, tasty food. Best for nature lovers and sunrise hikes.

Just fabulous.

A very remote and wild feeling place, in the heart of the forest, yet with a gorgeous tree house with beds, electricity and a proper bathroom, and actually only a 20 min drive away from “civilisation”. Amazing food, very friendly staff, and a lovely river to swim in. Perfect. Uk family with 2 teenagers.

As the name suggests, it is a retreat in the jungle.

There are no windows, but trees are natural windows. You can meet squirrels and monkeys, and you are surrounded by the sounds of many birds and insects in the morning and at night. The hotel offers a variety of activities, which can be booked. The beginning of April, when we stayed, was firefly season, and when it rained in the evening, more than a dozen fireflies surrounded our mosquito net. Highly recommended for natural lovers.

Something different – Treehouse a must have

A special experience in the middle of nature. Sleeping in the treehouse is a must have. Excursions can be booked through the hotel. There are massages next door and the most popular excursion destinations are nearby. Food and staff TOP! ☺️ Katrin, Switzerland, 2025, Travelled with family Very nice and special experience from accomodation to night safari. Daniele and me stayed for 2 night in Back of Beyond Jungle in the Tree House. This is a particular accomodation because u have just a rooftop without walls around; this make you able to have a very immersive experience in the nature. Food was very nice all made at the moment offering nice Sri Lankan food option too. As wildlife photographer we arranged 2 private nocturnal safari in the in the surrounding countryside and forests of Sigiriya. We have to say thank you to our guides Induwara, Ananda and Janaka that accompained us during an immersive 5 hours of night safari from 9 pm to 2 am (we booked a private safari as wildlife photographer, but the arrange al o daily group safari for hotel guests). During this experience we could spot also the elusive grey slander Loris and the rare Fishing cat. Thank you Induwara, Ananda and Janaka you give us the chance to have great pictures of notcturnal wildlife in Sigiriya.

Incredible nature experience!

Beautifully designed treetop accommodation. Lovely food and staff. Very chill. Eco- focused approach allowing you to feel at one with nature. Make sure you go searching for the nocturnal Loris monkeys – guide is on hand to take you. Conveniently placed to visit Sigiriya and Pidurangala Rocks!

Charming tree house near Pidurangala

We chose this unique experience to view Sigiriya Rock from atop Pidurangala Rock. The tree house was charming with an outdoor bathroom/shower and a mosquito screened cozy bed. Tho amenities are rudimentary, we lacked for nothing and had tasty filling meals. Staff was attentive and arranged a great nocturnal hike to see the arboreal loris which did not disappoint. The accommodations afforded privacy and were scattered thru the fry mixed evergreen forest. We had fantastic views of Sigiriya rock from the summit of Pidurangala which was a somewhat arduous hike especially the rock scramble at the top (which at 77, I was able to reach in sandals !!). The next morning we took the house bikes (funky but in good repair) and sauntered along the dirt road past a rural village, a school and farm fields while getting views of local culture. The hotel arranged transport to our next destination in Kandy. (Bring your own party beverages as there is no place to obtain in surrounding area. Highly recommend this charming delightful accommodation.
