Facts in brief
At Back of Beyond, our mission has always been to tread lightly on the land, restore abandoned spaces, and regenerate land masses. At Kahandamodara, our commitment goes further than providing nature-friendly accommodation. We have reforested the property, created butterfly and medicinal gardens, farming much of our own produce, and experimented with a range of resource efficient and environmentally friendly building materials and methods. Our greatest pride is being fully self-sufficient in electricity through solar power. To date, we have planted over 250 endemic and indigenous dry-zone trees, over 500 butterfly friendly flowering shrubs, vines and trees, and cultivated a medicinal garden and an orchard of 40 varieties of fruit and together with our agricultural produce, many of the fruits and vegetables you enjoy will be from our gardens. Walk around and you will notice belts of flowering shrubs and creepers that attract butterflies, bees, and birds, filling the air with colour and fragrance.
Since its inception, we have expanded the facilities with new accommodation units, an Ayurvedic Wellness Centre, a yoga hall, a sea-sand restaurant, and a swimming pool. While it still is a place of refuge for the traveller, it is also a serene retreat for yoga and meditation groups, corporate training functions as well as a fun place for large family get-togethers. The wide open spaces and walking paths are particularly conducive for yoga and meditation with a large hall accommodating 28 pax and 11 rooms with double and triple accommodation facilitating special programmes. The yoga mats available in house and a vegetarian meal plan catering to ayurvedic traditions can be arranged.
It is also a place which young children love. There is plenty of space to run around, play hide-and-seek and of course to frolic in the swimming pool. For those who love animals or rarely have an opportunity of being close to them, Kahadamodera is the ideal place. We have loveable rescue dogs (one which went on the boat rides too!), and there are always a few farm animals around – chickens and goats. Our permanent residents are wild peacocks and jungle fowl who strut through our property as if you do not exist! From the deck by the river, kids can also try their luck at fishing.
