Facts in brief

At Back of Beyond, our mission has always been to tread lightly on the land, restore abandoned spaces, and regenerate land masses. At Kahandamodara, our commitment goes further than providing nature-friendly accommodation. We have reforested the property, created butterfly and medicinal gardens, farming much of our own produce, and experimented with a range of resource efficient and environmentally friendly building materials and methods. Our greatest pride is being fully self-sufficient in electricity through solar power. To date, we have planted over 250 endemic and indigenous dry-zone trees, over 500 butterfly friendly flowering shrubs, vines and trees, and cultivated a medicinal garden and an orchard of 40 varieties of fruit and together with our agricultural produce, many of the fruits and vegetables you enjoy will be from our gardens. Walk around and you will notice belts of flowering shrubs and creepers that attract butterflies, bees, and birds, filling the air with colour and fragrance.

Since its inception, we have expanded the facilities with new accommodation units, an Ayurvedic Wellness Centre, a yoga hall, a sea-sand restaurant, and a swimming pool. While it still is a place of refuge for the traveller, it is also a serene retreat for yoga and meditation groups, corporate training functions as well as a fun place for large family get-togethers. The wide open spaces and walking paths are particularly conducive for yoga and meditation with a large hall accommodating 28 pax and 11 rooms with double and triple accommodation facilitating special programmes. The yoga mats available in house and a vegetarian meal plan catering to ayurvedic traditions can be arranged.

It is also a place which young children love. There is plenty of space to run around, play hide-and-seek and of course to frolic in the swimming pool. For those who love animals or rarely have an opportunity of being close to them, Kahadamodera is the ideal place. We have loveable rescue dogs (one which went on the boat rides too!), and there are always a few farm animals around – chickens and goats. Our permanent residents are wild peacocks and jungle fowl who strut through our property as if you do not exist! From the deck by the river, kids can also try their luck at fishing.

Siyambla bungalow – A family haven by the scrub

Siyambla Bungalow, shaded by a tamarind tree and overlooking a lawn that stretches to the scrub beyond, is ideal for families and peacock watchers. With its own living and dining areas, the bungalow accommodates up to 10 guests and is given out as a single unit. Designed for groups, its open spaces allow children to play while adults relax. A pantry with a fridge, kettle, and water filter adds convenience for families with young children, while meals are served at the sea-sand restaurant by the pool and yoga hall.

The four bedrooms each have distinct character. Two rooms by the dining area suit kids or grandparents, while an upstairs moonlit room is perfect for newlyweds or teenagers. Down a corridor, the fourth room has a verandah and attic space, offering privacy for those who prefer to be slightly apart from the group.

Sunlit villa – Spacious stays with stunning views

This villa has two bedrooms (one double and one triple), a living space, dining room and kitchenette on the ground floor, and a lovely upper floor for relaxation, work or as an extra sleeping space, where the views tend to be a distraction! The ever-changing sunlit patterns as dawn turns into day and then to dusk and when night falls, the dark sky and the glinting stars, make staying here a marvelous experience.

Solar-powered sunset villa comfort for all ages

The larger of the two villas, which sleeps a maximum of 6 persons, it has two spacious rooms and a loft. The loft is an absolute favourite with children! Keeping in mind the needs of our elderly guests, we have added air conditioning to this cottage.
We are thrilled that we can keep all our guests comfortable while not deviating from our environmental policy. It runs totally on solar energy!

This villa has living and dining areas and a verandah facing the setting sun – the perfect place for a sun downer.

Woody cabana – Rustic charm with a plunge pool

We had a lot of fun building this cottage – a vibe it seems to have retained! It was inspired by the Adobe architecture and was built of clay and mud and set alight. The unit consists of one large bedroom, an open format dining and living space, along with a rooftop area with a fabulous view. The unique feature of this cabana is the plunge pool – a new dimension to our pre-occupation with enjoyable bathing spaces.

Verandah rooms – Flexible stays for two

Two adjoining rooms with ensuite washrooms, the rooms are accessed through a verandah. Each room sleeps 2 pax and they can be booked separately.

Dining

The bungalow and the villas have their own dining spaces. Meals are served in the sea-sand restaurant – a fun place for informal get-togethers, with tables to accommodate separate parties. In addition, we have a BBQ grill on the open lawn.

Our cook is an expert at a wide variety of Sri Lankan and Western dishes. The flavour of the southern coast predominates in the Sri Lankan food, and there is a distinct ‘Sri Lankan touch’ to the Western dishes. In addition to vegetables and fruits, our farm garden will give you a variety of fresh ‘green leaves’ that have become a rarity in urban markets. If you see our cook wandering around with a basket, go with him and pick your meal! The seafood is fresh, often straight off the boat. You can join our staff at dawn as the boats return after a night of fishing to the Kahadamodera beach and pick your fish.

What our clients say

Real experiences from people like you

What a delightful place. We came not knowing what to expect and left wishing we could stay longer.

Anyone who takes such an enlightened and responsible attitude to bringing together tourism and protection of the environment should be held up as a model to which all tourist resorts should aspire. Back of Beyond does this to perfection.
That aside, the bird life is terrific (sit still in the shade and it will come to you), the bungalows are great, and the food is as good as anywhere we have had on the island.
Well done to all the staff!

Chris & Ann , Witney, Oxfordshire, England

Exceptional service with a personal touch: attentive staff who go above and beyond!

The staff were wonderful. Friendly, efficient and always willing. A special touch is that there was always someone volunteering to go with us as a guide anywhere we wanted to!! They were always available without ever being intrusive.

Nalinika, Sri Lanka

Spacious, eco-friendly bungalows with exceptional service!

Enjoyed the open and spacious environment, the boat ride, proximity to the beach while not being too close, and the friendly and excellent service of the staff. Particularly appreciated the eco-friendly architecture of the bungalow and the lovely verandah upstairs and the benches spread out throughout the compound!

Himalee, Colombo

Unforgettable experiences, eco-friendly style, and wildlife wonders at the Back of Beyond!

The Back of Beyond – what a hidden jewel! Love the style of the cottage and having a beer in the sunken outdoor bath!!! The people, the food, the service were excellent. The night walk along the beach was amazing and we saw a green sea turtle and on the way back to the bungalow we saw a wild cat (not me – a red head) Loved sitting on the roof on the cottage at sunset, watching all the birds. Thank you for the Back of Beyond experience.

Peaceful cottages, warm hospitality, and wildlife wonders!

My girlfriend and I spent a marvelous four days at Back of Beyond in Tangalle, and we can’t recommend it highly enough. The cottage was airy and comfortable, set amidst well-tended gardens filled wild animals, including peacocks, lizards, and fireflies. The caretakers of the property, Nelson and Mahesh, were kind and attentive, and made up feel right at home with their delicious home-cooked Sri Lankan meals. Just ten minutes away was a windswept beach which we had just about to ourselves. And for the price, it’s amazing value. We’ll definitely be back!

Unmatched comfort, serene grounds, and exceptional service at Back of Beyond!

Fantastic stay at Back of Beyond in Tangalle. The place was extremely comfortable and I had some of the best sleep I have had in years. The grounds are very natural and put you in a very relaxed mood. Pool was great and the empty beach was a short walk away. Thanks to Yohan, Nelson and the rest of the staff for making my stay a memorable one
