Facts in brief

A few minutes’ drive from the famous archeological sites, the bungalow is located in an oasis of green with paddy fields stretching down to the tank. As you stand in the verandah of the bungalow you will see the domes of Ruvanvelisaya, Jetavanarama and Mirisavetiya glinting in the sun between the trees. It is a tranquil and beautiful place which facilitates quick trips into the many places of interest in and around Anuradhapura, and also rest and relaxation in comfort after a day out in the sun.

Accommodation

The elegant open plan bungalow has 3 air-conditioned bed rooms for a maximum of 7 adults. The large bed rooms are attractively furnished and have spacious attached washrooms with hot water showers. One room connects directly with the dining area and is particularly suitable for children and elderly visitors. The other two rooms are slightly detached from the open lounge and are more private.

A verandah that is almost one with the garden, is a good place to gather around for a chat, or sit and read a book. Garden benches in shaded seclusion invite you to enjoy the breeze and solitude. Occasionally you can hear the temple drums in the distance.

A wooden plinth in the dining room with mats and cushions is loved by children – to play board games, cards and loll about and read. The two acre garden has over 60 species of indigenous trees and a paddy field.

To some Anuradhapura is a place of pilgrimage and to others it is a place of awesome wonder as one delves into Sri Lanka’s 2500 year old history. While Water’s Edge can be the home from which visitors venture out on their voyages of devotion or exploration, the comfortable bungalow and its serene surrounds can also be a place of retreat to spend a quiet few days in the hinterland.

Quiet and clean with magnificent views

We stayed just one night but wish we stayed for two. The view from the verandah of the bungalow is just spectacular – three stupas across the large lake in front of the property. The bungalow itself was very comfortable with just three bedrooms. We booked one room and since the other two rooms were unoccupied on that day, we had the whole place to ourselves. They have got new mattresses which were super comfortable. It’s not super-luxury but very tasteful and clean. The toilets are huge and with hot water. The bungalow keeper Mangala and his asst were also very helpful and made some delicious Sri Lankan food. Highly recommended.

Peace and quiet.

So peaceful! We could have sat on the verandah for hours watching bird and wildlife in the garden. So relaxing.
The staff were friendly and attentive. We had a lovely evening meal and breakfast. Gluten-free diet catered for very well. They made us feel very welcome. It was a great location to visit the temples etc of Anuradhapura. Very accessible. We wished we could have stayed longer………next time!

Ideal location for a relaxing stay in Anuradhapura

Stayed with parents. The care taker is called Mangala. We stayed for 2 nights and had booked entire house – which is 3 double rooms. Food was excellent – we had vegeterian food and excellent Sri Lankan Authentic cooking. As many comments Mangala is a genueily good care taker. The lake was swimmable – there is a nice place to swim – safe – just 100m walk. The metal door was locked and cannot get in to the lake from the garden. A lot of birds visit the garden. If you want to have a simple vacation, be with the nature ideal location. Kudos to the owner for not spoiling the natural trees and for not over commercialzing the spot. You can just relax watching birds – many rare birds did visit (also some monkeys and peacocks).

Perfect spot for nature lovers, just outside of town

Water’s Edge was such a delight. The three bedroom bungalow is surrounded by a large garden and views over the lake to the temples beyond – amazing at night time when they’re lit up. Mangala and Supun, the hosts, were fantastic and Mangala’s
cooking was incredible – some of the best Sri Lankan food we’ve every had. The room was spotless. From the guesthouse it’s easy to get a bus into Anuradhapura or towards Wilpattu. There’s a large veranda with rattan chairs perfect for relaxing and watching the miryad birds and animals, including peacocks, mongoose and birds of paradise in the garden.
