Facts in brief

The Weir House is situated in the village of Ulapane – nestled in a valley in the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka. The landscape is an undulating tapestry of pine covered hillsides, indigenous forests, spice groves and tea plantations. The region was once part of the kingdom of Gampola and ancient temples whose walls are still covered with intricate murals are worth visiting.

The Weir House is located on a 10-acre coffee and spice estate. The Raja Ella stream flows at the edge of our property as it winds its way downstream to merge with Sri Lanka’s longest river – the Mahaweli.

The five bedroom house is designed to be a home away from home – a mix of quiet luxury and comfort. French windows open out to sweeping views of treetops and gardens filled with tropical foliage. Here, you enjoy the best of both worlds: the seclusion of being off the beaten track, yet within easy reach of Sri Lanka’s cultural treasures, scenic trails, and historic sites.
Meals are an experience in themselves, prepared by our two resident chefs who delight in turning fresh produce, estate-grown spices, and seasonal flavors into memorable, multi-sensory dishes.

The Weir House is a wonderful base from which to explore the “hill country”. Popular destinations such as Kandy, Ambuluwawa, Kitulgala and Adam’s Peak are just an hour away, Nuwara Eliya is easy to reach as a full day excursion and we are en-route for travellers heading to Ella by train.

The surroundings invite you to pause, breathe deeply, and settle into the natural rhythm of the hills.

What our clients say

Real experiences from people like you

“Best customer experience in a great and beautiful place

We spend 3 days at the Weir house and Maha and his team had been very careful and nice allowing us to spend the best stay. The hotel is very well decorated, the cooking chef is incredible as all the meals were delicious with the great taste of Sri Lanka. Lastly, thanks to the support of Dushi, we discovered the countryside.”

- Wellody, France

“An outstanding experience

My wife and I had an exceptional experience at The Weir House. During our 3-night stay, the manager, Maha, truly went above and beyond to make us feel at home. He was always available, incredibly helpful, and warmly welcoming. Dusi, our waiter, was equally outstanding—polite, proactive, and undoubtedly one of the most professional waiters I’ve encountered.

The hotel is the perfect spot to disconnect and relax, nestled in the middle of nature. Its serene and isolated location adds to the charm, making it an ideal getaway for anyone seeking peace and tranquility.”

Simply Stunning

The decision to spend a full week at The Weir House was possibly one of the best decisions we’ve ever made about a holiday. It was a long journey from the airport, but we wanted to push through and get to our first destination as quickly as possible. The last couple of miles are the toughest because the roads are poor, but you are quite literally travelling into the back and beyond, so of course it isn’t going to be easily accessible, otherwise it wouldn’t be the exclusive retreat that it is. All that said, it’s beyond worthwhile once you get there, because as well as receiving the warmest of welcomes and despite spending hours reading reviews and watching youtube videos, nothing had prepared us for the wonderful experience of being at one with nature, whilst staying in such beautiful and unique accommodation. Eating breakfast with jungle and wildlife before your eyes is an unforgettable experience. The lush green colours everywhere around you is music to your  soul. Listening to and seeing tropical birds as you eat your way through meals that are prepared and served with love is a privilege and pure joy. Seeing birds, monkeys, deer and other creatures was thrilling – and all this on top of getting the best hospitality we’ve ever experienced. The Weir House delivers a unique package that encompasses hospitality at its very best
and nature at its finest. Memories fade with time, but we will always remember our Weir House experience and especially the love and care shown to us by Maha and Dushi. Tip: Don’t use this place as a stopping point; instead, stay for several days so that you can enjoy the whole experience.

Love it!

This place haunted us in the best way possible. Upon arrival, we were immediately offered a welcome cocktail, which brought a smile to our faces. The staff were genuinely kind and helpful, treating us with great respect. The dinner was absolutely delicious. The room was clean and beautiful, and the entire interior was magical. We were taken care of every step of the way. If we had known how wonderful it would be, we would
have stayed longer. Thank you for this amazing experience!

A beautiful oasis in the Kandy area where one can relax &  unwind or use as a base from which to venture out to explore.

A beautiful home surrounded by colourful flowers and lush greenery. We were totally spoilt by Maha and his wonderful staff and the meals were amazing. The cooking class though lots of fun was very informative and included many local delicacies. It is a wonderful venue to relax away from the hustle and bustle of Kandy. If you wish to treat yourself to an amazing experience in this busy city then Weir House is perfect. We certainly found it this way. Tip: Be prepared to be spoilt by Maha & his lovely staff.

Amazing beautiful accommodation surrounded by forest with a nearby whitewater river.

My family and I stayed at the Weir House and it was one of the highlights of our trip to Sri Lanka. The house is beautifully decorated, blending colonial and modern aspects seamlessly together. Its location is in the mountains surrounded by forest and sitting on the terrace the nearby whitewater river can be heard. Our room was great with all the amenities we needed and then some. The food was delicious. And, a very special
thanks goes to Maha, the manager, we had several very nice discussions. At check out we traveled to our next accommodation in Kandy. Unfortunately, the new accommodation in Kandy didn’t meet our expectations, and after calling Maha, he recommended a great hotel and helped us book it. His kindness really saved the day for us.

A stunning forest retreat

Such beautiful accommodation. The location is a feast for the senses – all around is verdant forest and the constant buzz of jungle creatures and the rushing river water. We spent three days ensconced just enjoying the exceptional views, reading, chatting and playing games. The river nearby was a fantastic place to paddle and cool off – a good number of hours were spent swimming and clambering on the rocks. The food was truly amazing and Dana and Maha and the team were attentive and kind. Staying here proved to be one of the highlights of our tour of Sri Lanka.

Boutique hotel excellence

This might just about be the most wonderful hotel we ever stayed in. Idyllic situation in beautiful woodland beside a stream. Great bird-spotting all around and some lovely walks along quiet lanes. The rooms tastefully furnished and decorated, and the food….! Just gorgeous. All the staff friendly, helpful and attentive, nothing was too much trouble. Lovely swimming pool. We’d love to go back. Delightful stay

We immediately felt at home when we arrived at the Weir House. The beautiful living room has such a cozy and homey feeling and you are surrounded by nature. You can relax at the pool while only hearing the sound of the nearby river. The staff is very kind and gentle and made sure we were always comfortable and had everything we needed. It is also just half an hour away from the famous Ambuluwawa Tower, making it the perfect day trip.

Something truly special

I stayed in many nice places on this trip, but the Weir House really stood out as something special. A boutique property with only four guest rooms and outstanding personal service, it will make you feel pampered and care for. Maha, the manager, took care of my every need and even kept me company at dinner, as I was traveling solo. The chef is outstanding and I thoroughly enjoyed each meal; I was also surprised to have choices for breakfast and dinner each day, given how small the property is. The sound of the rushing brook below lulled me to sleep at night and there were forest paths to walk on nearby. My room had a hanging swing on a private porch right outside the double French doors, perfect for reading and lounging. I highly recommend this place as
a getaway from the hustle and bustle of Sri Lankan tourist circuit.

Special places

We loved our stay at The Weir House. From the time of inquiry with Sumudu to the moment we left, everything was on point. We booked a total of 3 rooms which included a triple, however we were given the quadruple in place since we also had a little guest with us to make our stay more comfortable.
The property is beautiful and the interior is tastefully decorated. Maha and his small team were exceptional and managed everything most perfectly. It’s hard to understand how they flow with everything so calmly but they made it all work. Food was awesome. The soups, juices and Sri Lankan food needs a special mention as they were delicious. This property is perfect when you travel with a larger group Vs a mere double as the whole property is then exclusively yours.
We enjoyed our stay very much and can’t wait to be back.

A magnificent natural wonder.

They have a garden filled with coffee beans, cinnamon trees, pepper plants, and more. Surrounded by forest, this property offers the chance to walk through the garden or swim while listening to the sounds of nature. It’s definitely worth staying more than one night. Everything we ate was delicious. The friendly and kind staff make you feel at ease. Everything was
thoughtfully arranged in the hotel room. Special thanks to Maha, who waved us off from the hotel.

We couldn’t have asked for a better stay for our first three nights in Sri Lanka.

Located in a jungle area with a river running nearby, the setting is beautiful and very tranquil. The room and communal areas were very comfortable. Around the hotel, you can visit the gardens (where they grow various ingredients for the restaurant), go on hikes or drive into Kandy in 45-60mins. The food was delicious and served by a very friendly and highly attentive team. Highly recommended.

We had a lovely stay at the Weir House.

The staff is very accommodating and attentive. The house is located a bit off the beaten tracks in a calm and green surrounding, perfect to relax. The interior and setting are really tasteful. We used our stay to do cycling and hiking in the surrounding area, but also Kandy and Nuwara Eliya are not too far away (less than 1 hour).

As there are only five bedrooms, it was very cozy and private. Overall we would definitely recommend and hope to visit this place soon again.

After a bumpy ride we reached this beautiful villa which had a beautiful view from down the stairs.

The villa has 5 rooms and we occupied 3 of them which were equipped with the very basic accessories. The room set up was very cozy. The family room down stairs had 2 beds and ample space. The food was good they had different menus for dinner, the meals changed every day and the food came in hot and yum. My personal favorite was their hoppers they served on our last day’s breakfast which was really tasty. The staff at the villa are very accommodating and very helpful. We had a well deserved break and had a great relaxed time as a family ❤️

Staying at the Weir house in Ulapane was an absolute delight!

Surrounded by the serene lush green forest, it was a true escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. The food was simply divine and the service was exceptional. As for the bedding, it was incredibly comfortable, ensuring a restful night’s sleep every time. Highly recommend this hidden gem for anyone seeking a peaceful retreat with top- notch hospitality.

Have you ever been to a fairytale place tucked away in the woods?

Well this is it, The Weir House. Now, don&’t get me wrong, it is one hell of a drive from the airport, but so worth it. This place is drop, dead, stunningly gorgeous. It is straight out of a designer home magazine. Every inch of this place is luxury, personified in an eco-friendly way. Now, to the staff. You cannot fault them at all. They are Uber friendly, fantastically helpful and do all of the above with a winning smile on their faces. The food is good, fresh and served to you in style daily. Breakfast came with our booking and we added dinner on. A 3 course meal for $18 dollars was truly worth it. There service is outstanding, it truly is. Dana was a wonderful help and Maha too. Maha took us by tuk tuk to Ambuluwawa Biodiversity
Complex, to climb the tower and brought us back for a very reasonable fee. Dana was alway so helpful, with anything that you needed, carrying bags, food orders and both of them always with a smile. I only stayed here 2 nights as I was taking the blue train to Ella, however even with those arrangements Maha was super helpful. I would highly recommend this guesthouse. It is worth every penny, it is truly home away from home, right in the heart of nature. Calm, peaceful and serene. You truly couldn’t ask for more. I absolutely loved it hear and cannot wait to return in the near future.
